Jana Blankenship has spent every summer of her life swimming in the cold ocean water in a tiny remote town in Northern Maine. Her mind, body, spirit and hair never feel better that when she bathes in those seaweed rich water. Captain Blankenship was born out of her desire to create a line that celebrated the intelligence of nature and uses wild-harvested seaweed from Maine as a hero ingredient for all products.
She is also a passionate educator about the power of plants for beauty and well-being and has a deep reverence for the natural world. She has written two books, Wild Beauty (2019) and Seasonal Family Almanac (2023). Jana is trained in herbalism and natural perfumery, and when she isn’t working, she is hiking or playing with her kids. She lives in the Hudson Valley in New York with her two children and two huskies.

Seaweed not only brings us back to the primacy of the ocean, but it also incredibly beneficial to hair and scalp health. Seaweed extracts help soothe scalp, promote hair growth, strengthen hair, smooth frizz and add elasticity and shine. We currently source five different types of seaweed from Maine - Atlantic Wakame, Oarweed, Bladderwrack, Rockweed, Atlantic Nori- that we make into extracts we use across our products. These seaweeds are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, proteins and amino acids. Not only is seaweed a regenerative ingredient but it is also a source of blue carbon, meaning that it sequesters carbon.
