Evelyn inherited the early gray gene. After 20+ years of fighting her grays with constant hair dye, she finally ditched the dye and embraced her natural silver hair in 2015. At the time, she found very little information about the process of embracing your gray, and very few products for supporting natural gray hair. This ultimately led her to be inspired to created Silverist years later. Silverist’s mission is to support the gray hair journey with not only products but also education and community. She’s never regretted the decision to go gray and has found it tremendously liberating from a maintenance and health perspective.

Gray hairs are actually translucent strands of hair that no longer have melanin. The effect of these translucent strands along one’s pigmented hair gives the appearance of “gray”/”salt and pepper” or other tones, depending on one’s original hair pigmentation.
The loss of melanin means silver strands are more sensitive to heat damage and UV and also contributes to the feeling that “grays” have a different coarser texture.
In general, gray hairs can also be higher porosity and so more sensitive to fluctuations in moisture/humidity.
With age, the scalp may also be dryer and have less sebum.
